Press Release
For Immediate Release
Date: Saturday, October 16, 2021
Time: 10 A.M-11:30 A.M.
Zoom Registration: checkthesheriff.com/screening
Deputy gangs within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have wreaked havoc on Black and Brown communities for far too long. The sheriff’s deputies, who murdered Paul Rea and Anthony Vargas, two young Chicano men, were LASD Banditos gang prospects. Families who have lost loved ones to sheriff violence are spearheading a movement to end LASD’s reign of terror and expose the department’s egregious practices of protecting gangs within their ranks, planting evidence, and killing community members.
On Saturday, October 16, 2021 from 10am - 11:30am, you are invited to join the Check the Sheriff coalition as we host a virtual screening of the Gravel Institute’s short documentary titled The Murderous Police Gangs of Los Angeles. You can register to attend the event at checkthesheriff.com/screening.
The film explores both criminal gangs within the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and their impact on the families of Paul Rea and Anthony Vargas, two Chicano young men who were murdered by LASD deputies. They are some of the families that are leading the charge in unearthing the corruption deep within LASD and seeking justice and accountability for their loved ones.
The virtual screening will be followed by a panel with community members and families who are directly impacted by LASD gangs and sheriff violence.
